La La Land embodies what my philosophy on film entails; if cinema is an opportunity to engage directly with our emotions, La La Land is as stirring and as invigorating a film as they come. Damien Chazelle is a 31 year old genius, and has concocted a film that is lavish in detail and scope, yet endearing in personality. It appeals to the sentimentality naturally associated with nostalgia and yet it rewrites the conventions, its bittersweet ending poignant because of the expectations and desires that nostalgia has prompted. A beautiful cinematic experience if ever there was one.
