It’s a Wonderful Life: The Richest Man in the Town
“Strange, isn't it? Each man's life touches so many other lives. When he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?”
Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life is a beautiful story about family and community. Everyone wants to be a big shot. Everyone wants to be number one. But the reality is most people are ordinary. Regular citizens that spend all their time doing regular things. Capra finds the magic in that. George Bailey was always ambitious but circumstances have led him to take over his father’s business. He wants to travel the world and build things. His father’s untimely death changes the course of his life. He is unable to escape the normal small time life. His brother is able to and that causes some resentment. For the most George is content and honourable. He detests the rich Mr.Potter for caring only about money. George is getting by until the walls collapse. Everything goes wrong which leads to immense sadness and suicidal thoughts. The writers opt for a fantasy element to teach George that he has affected the community in a positive way. He has helped people and even saved lives without even thinking about it. The angel guides him back to his purpose and the whole city parties for his return. He embraces his loved ones as they all gather around the Christmas tree. The angel finally gets his wings and we all rejoice at how wonderful life is.
