I will never grow tired of the meta-narrative horror juggernaut that is the scream franchise and this is no exception. However, this movie almost feels like Wes Craven himself is tired of it as each successive entry doggedly tries to outsmart the audience in less and less clever ways. The Russian nesting doll opening scene was honestly the best part of the movie, and was just about the only part that I was impressed by, despite the smart and quick writing in the rest of the film. It was definitely better than some other entries in the franchise (3), but ended up feeling like just more of the same. Sometimes however, you really don’t need to reinvent the wheel, and more of the same makes a perfectly enjoyable movie. I still love the scream movies, but unless you really want to finish out the series as a super fan, you can probably skip it and not miss too much.
