Laura Palmer's death was more than the loss of a person. She was a friend, a daughter, a lover, but that's not all. To some, she was a call to adventure. To others, she was an oddity. To very few, she was everything. To everyone, she was a secret flame that took its warmth with it in the wind. The show uses her death to explore the notion that "grief is natural". It's chaos, it's confusion, it's overwhelming, it's damaging, and it can end everything. Lynch employs incredible empathy in what he creates, turning a story so deeply sad into a warm, validating experience. Even in its darker moments, the show holds your hand as you go on.
The setting is unmatched. It's beautiful, complex, inviting, but also ominous and eerie. The fact that I grew up visiting where it was shot only added to all of these feelings for me, I loved looking at familiar sights like the café. The cast is amazing as well, the obvious highlight being Kyle MacLachlan, who brings more to his character than most performers could ever dream of. Dale Cooper is a phenomenal protagonist who can leap into the dramatics as quickly as he can provide comedy, and he won me over as soon as I saw that he and I share an appreciation for pitch-black coffee. There are times when it can feel like the show throws in a new player every minute, but they all end up very loveable and interesting by the end. Similarly, there are times when the show can feel a little slow, but it rewards you for sticking with it and seeing where it ends up. Anything confusing I've experienced could either be Lynch being Lynch or something that'll get touched upon later, so I'll hold off on counting that as any form of downside. I look forward to seeing the rest of what this show has to offer, I hear that I have no idea where I'm headed. I have very high hopes :)
