“Just for once… let me look on you with my own eyes,”

One of the biggest surprises of this marathon so far. This is the warmest I've felt after watching a Star Wars movie. From the exciting rescue mission on Tatooine, to the sweet, good-natured culture of fuzzy little Ewoks, to the tender moments of love between siblings, friends, and lovers, all the way to the unbelievably emotionally satisfying final battle, this film ends up filling you with life all the way through it. While I can't recommend going through all of these movies chronologically as I have done for this rewatch, I can't deny the enormous completion this story now has for me. Vader, especially, gets a lot of time to shine here, which hits much harder with the weight of The Prequel Trilogy behind it. The story of Anakin is probably the most emotional of the franchise. Jeez, the tragedy of that kid who was once so full of love for the universe living for years as a robot pet to a man whose lies cost him everything is immensely heartbreaking. Luke seeing the good in his father like his mother did and fighting to defend him as Obi-Wan and Yoda, those who once knew that kid, show they've given up on him is incredible. Him yelling "NEVER" as the music swells up and he rushes forward against all odds... it's powerful. It's an important moment that entirely defines Luke as a hero, his unwillingness to let hope die within a person. I'm sure glad they remembered that when bringing him back ;)

It makes me laugh that people hated the Ewoks upon first witnessing this film, imagine a universe where these adorable little love monsters are the worst thing to happen to Star Wars. There really wasn't much in this that bugged me aside from the Jabba the Hutt stuff taking up a lot of time it didn't need to. It could have allowed more time for the space battle to get a bit more build-up and planning and stakes and so on and so forth. It wasn't nearly as grand or impactful as everything in the throne scene, understandably so, even if it was fun. The ending makes up for it, though. Watching as an entire universe celebrates, victory finally unifying all of these characters for one glorious moment together. Beautiful. It's a good thing this is where Star Wars ends, and there's nothing left for me to watch. Right? Right???
