The first Inside Out, in my opinion, might be the most overrated movie to come out of Pixar. I know that's a hot take, but I was never effected by it on the same level as others. I never found it sad or as groundbreaking as everyone else. It's not a bad film by any means though. The comedy hits, the performances are fun, and it has some pretty creative bits. It's just not a 5/5 masterpiece in my eyes. Inside Out 2 is more of the same and I'd say I liked it exactly as much as the original.
The animation is absolutely gorgeous. It's some of the best I've ever seen. The human characters and environments are incredible. It's only a matter of time until we're unable to tell the difference between reality and 3D animation. The different emotions all look so soft and cuddly making a stark contrast between the real world and Riley's mind.
The new emotions are all fun additions to the crew and are well cast. Maya Hawke has the biggest role and therefore the most screen time of the new five, but they all have a reason for being there.
I will say that unlike some of the Pixar cash grabs we've gotten recently that this series feels like it makes complete sense. I want to see a third film where Riley is an adult dealing with the stress that comes with being older. That would make the film cater more towards adults, but in my opinion the best "kids" movies can be enjoyed by adults, too.
The first half is a little slow and some of the character decisions felt like they should have gone in a different direction, but those are basically the only problems I have.
This was a super enjoyable time and beats the vast majority of the other movies that have come out this year.
