what she says: i’m fine
what she means: ennis has NEVER opened up to anyone before the way he did with jack, not even to his own wife or his children. he put his guard up to anyone and everyone except for jack. jack is the only person that he trusts enough to tell him about his past, to laugh with him, to get intimate with him. ennis and jack were born in the wrong time and the wrong place and we’re kept apart because of circumstance. their love for each other is so strong, so tender and so beautiful that when they are apart from each other they are physically in pain. jack and ennis are two men who couldn’t love each other fully because of societal pressure, and internalized homphobia. jack tells ennis time and time again how much he wants to be with him how much he misses him, how much he longs for him. ennis is still haunted by the gruesome death of a gay man from his childhood that he gives up any hope of a happy and fulfilling life with jack. The last time they see each other jack pleads to him one last imagining the life that they could have led together. until it’s TOO LATE and jack is mercilessly murdered for being gay. jack is forever haunted with the life that they would have had together. He promises to remember jack, and he promise to be proud of the time they spend together or their everlasting love the good, the bad, and the ugly. And with that he breathes in the scent from his lovers shirt the only thing he has left from his is a postcard and a bloody shirt. a final goodbye to his one and only.
