The Virgin Suicides

The Virgin Suicides

"What we have here is a dreamer. Someone completely out of touch with reality."

As a big fan of Lost In Translation, I wanted to explore Sofia Coppola's movies a bit more. I thought the best place to start off was with The Virgin Suicides, her first film. I realise that this film is definetely not as good as Lost In Translation, but it did have some good moments.

The plot was not captivating at all and felt as thin as paper after the beginning of the film. It was slightly interesting at first, with it being about how one of them had suicidal tendencies, but then after that it's just about how mysterious the sisters are and how much their parents are terrible, which didn't interest me much. It never really felt as if it delivered a good film.

The acting from the sisters is fine, it just appears very one-sided. I know it is supposed to maintain the fact that the girls are a 'mystery', but I just felt they came across as very unlikable. They seemed to recover from the beginning of the film quite quickly, and became quite whiny afterwards. Maybe the writing is to blame for that and not the acting, but it was apparent nonetheless.
The parents annoyed me a lot as the father never really seemed to care and the mother, although she cared a lot, never felt genuine in her acting.

One of the things it does do well is mastering the presentation of teenage awkwardness. I often found myself cringing a lot from the film - whether it be the awkward conversations to trying to impress girls, that area of the film was written nicely.

All in all, I don't think The Virgin Suicides is an awful film, but I do feel that it could have been a lot better.
