“You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it.”
The Grand Budapest Hotel is a great movie - artsy and wonderful to watch, although it doesn’t come without one or two flaws.
It’s about the story of Zero (Tony Revolori), a lobby boy at The Grand Budapest Hotel, who goes under the wing of Gustave H, a concierge at the hotel.
The most standout thing about the film is the cinematography. It’s fascinating to watch and every shot is so outside the box. It’s Wes Anderson’s trademark to have creative shots in every frame, but the problem with having these all the time is that it loses it’s effectiveness (which I never felt until after 4 or so rewatches). That’s not me saying they aren’t amazing shots because they are, it just feels slightly overdone and can get same-y.
The writing was great. The dialogue quick-witted, sharp and even poetic, with many memorable lines and jokes that will almost definitely stay with you after watching the movie. The plot is great - it’s smart and fast paced, never making the film tiring.
The narration from Jude Law was a bad call in my opinion. It brought down the pace and was uninteresting to me. Moments of dialogue and characters interacting with each other were much more entertaining.
The lineup in this film, damn. An all star cast who give their all throughout.
Ralph Fiennes carried this film for me personally. His quick-witted acting and posh, English charm made me enjoy his character immensely.
Tony Revolori was also good, but was massively out-shined by Ralph Fiennes. He still did a great job as Zero though.
The supporting cast was huge. From Willem Dafoe and F. Murray Abraham to Jeff Goldblum, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody and so many more. They all play such distinct and unique characters really well and are so much fun to watch.
It’s full of personality and, yes, it does have a few downers but nonetheless it’s a very enjoyable, creative movie that’s great fun to sit through.
