Ted’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Do you like scary movies?”
Scream is one of the most iconic horror films of the 90s, and is deservedly so. It’s a sadistic film full of tension and mystery that is thrilling to watch.
When two teenagers are found slaughtered, high school student Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) discovers that she may be the killer’s next target.
The film has an exhilarating tone that doesn't perish throughout. The fun mystery element kept me engaged throughout, and the twist was pulled off excellently. I did sort of guess it due to the unsubtle acting, but maybe that was the point. Either way, the film completely tricked me.
The cheap sound effects are disappointing and makes the film feel a bit dated but it doesn’t matter that much because of how entertaining the film is. The comedy landed surprisingly well and balances the tone of the movie so it isn’t all doom and gloom, making it a more fun experience.
Ghostface is a very menacing character and deserves to be the horror icon that he is. The way he takes some damage during the chases is great, as it emphasises that this isn’t an otherworldly being, it’s just another human being which in some ways is scarier. The movie does not hold back on creating some horrific moments of violence that are incredibly effective.
Drew Barrymore provides a great introduction to the movie, and gives a performance filled with so much emotion that it is sometimes difficult to watch. I love it when some actors have not so much time on screen, yet absolutely steal the show. Neve Campbell is good and creates an interesting lead character, and David Arquette gives a memorable comedy performance. But none of them are quite as good.
I don’t think the sequels have been as well received, but I’m still going to check out Scream 2 as this is definitely one of my all time favourite horror films.
