Ted’s review published on Letterboxd:
“I drive.”
Although I feel it’s overhyped, Drive is a great film with a unique atmosphere to it.
I actually didn’t care for Ryan Gosling’s performance much in this film. I thought he played the stone cold, cool guy character well and was great in moments where that mood was needed, but I can’t say I cared for Driver at all. His character lacked emotion, maybe to make him more mysterious, but I just couldn’t connect to him. Also (I may be controversial in saying this) but when he wasn’t driving his car excellently, he came across as a bit of a loser. There was something about him that wasn’t really a ‘lone wolf’ character, but more of a very lonely character who I pitied instead of looking up to in awe.
Carey Mulligan was alright in her role, but felt quite underwhelming to watch. Oscar Isaac was great for the time he was in it, and gave one of the more memorable performances in the film.
Bryan Cranston was amazing as always and transformed into his character completely; Great to watch.
The dialogue, when there is dialogue, was well written. The lack of dialogue made it more difficult to connect to the characters, although that wasn’t a huge problem that affected the movie as a whole. The plot wasn’t anything revolutionary but it had some great and satisfying moments for sure.
The chases were fun and full of non-stop adrenaline; All the crashes were awesome to watch. The violence is much more severe in the second half, including things like someone’s head being blown off with a shotgun. I liked the goriness of it as it created a darker tone to the movie that I thought was missing, but if you don’t like graphic violence then I’d consider covering your eyes.
It also has a great soundtrack that creates a distinct mood for the film and makes it memorable.
It was great, but I guess I just expected more from this film. Nevertheless it’s definitely worth checking out.
