Happy to confirm this as my favorite movie so far this year, and the kind of horror movie that gives me hope again, particularly after being subjected to so much drivel in the genre this year. Longlegs blends the investigative elements of things like Silence of the Lambs, Cure and Zodiac, with an incredibly sinister and ominous atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re watching something you shouldn’t be seeing. So many horror movies try to capture that voyeuristic feeling and Longlegs does it expertly, placing you into scenes where you often don’t know whose perspective you’re supposed to be in, and it all contributes to a deeply unsettling feeling. The other thing that I feel like hasn’t really been captured in the marketing (obviously) is that Longlegs is funny. There’s a wry sense of humor embedded throughout so many scenes, and also multiple scenes that make you laugh in that uncomfortable “should I be laughing?” kind of way which the best horror movies often capture.
Nic Cage is arguably a top 5 most “known” actor of all time and the fact that he’s completely unrecognizable in Longlegs is a marvel. Not only is this by far my favorite performance I’ve ever seen from him, but you can tell he’s really going for something that deviates from the types of roles he’s been known to take in the last decade. It’s a performance that will go do down as one of the most iconic ever in the genre, possessing so much menace and evil, with flashes of that manic Cage energy we all know and love.
