That’s it???
Even if I didn’t expect to love this I was under the impression that there was some sort of radical decision-making going on here, was even hoping to vehemently hate it if that’s what it called for, but at every point Perkins opts for the most lukewarm execution imaginable. Maika Monroe innocent (and actually great) but there’s somehow both too much Nic Cage and not enough at the same time. Backs itself into corners in BOTH genres it’s mixing, overexplains AND insists on its own ambiguity, operates with the promise that there’s something other than what we obviously expect going on, and the most subversive aspect of the movie is its refusal to actually subvert anything. Not elevated Blumhouse but elevated late-2000’s schlock, think The Unborn (2009). Only other Perkins film I’ve seen is I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, an awful movie but still displays more formal deviation from the norm than Longlegs. Massive disappointment.
Underrated bit is not the giant Clinton portrait to telegraph 1995 (I thought “no one would have a portrait like that but it’s the FBI what do I know”) but rather the identical giant Nixon portrait when we flashback to the 70’s sitting in some random suburban dad’s house. I think this was intentionally funny and wanted more shit like that.
