Jim R.’s review published on Letterboxd:
There is this feeling. This feeling I am talking about is something that I don't come across very often anymore. To be totally honest I haven't felt it for years.
What is that feeling? Its the feeling of, well, feeling like a kid again. Feeling like the world is full of hope, adventure, excitement and joy. That feeling when you've just discovered a movie, a show , a game , or something that makes your whole world seem completely different. This is that movie for me.
There is nothing I can say about this movies qualities that hasn't been already said a million times . From the amazing artstyle and the nuanced character moments, to the comic book-esque storytelling, it all has been endlessly praised ,as it should be.
So, what did I want to mention about this movie, that I had to do a review about it? It's that feeling, man. As I get older and lose that sweet hopefullnes and joy I had as a kid , whenever I get that feeling I cherish it. Especially in these horrible times where the world feels like one step removed from a dystopia , that feeling is something I cherish even more. And the movie didn't just give it to me, it embodied it. This movie IS that feeling.
Everything about it.
From start to finish I could feel the kid inside me explode with excitement just like the first time I started reading my Spiderman encyclopedia that I got for my birthday. And nothing compares to that in the whole damn world. And almost no other film in the last ten years has given me something remotely close to that .
So yeah, this whacky ass movie that features a spider pig and more memes than I can count, is one of the most important pieces of media for me. And although it took a second viewing for me to get there, it didn't matter. Because the feeling was there waiting for me whenever I was ready to get it back again.
This is the best Spiderman movie.
This is one the best comic book movies.
This is one of the best animated movies.
This is one of the best movies of all time.
This is my favourite feeling and I dont want to ever let it go. And through this movie it will always be here with me.
