I'm not the biggest fan of Norse mythology or Vikings lore but I really enjoyed the world-building and the characters in this, I just wish there was more meat on the bones because it starts so strong with how it sets up stakes and there was a lot of momentum in the 3rd act, with character motivations that made sense, but a lot of that happens in the middle drags.
I checked my watch twice between the time the titular Northman lands in Iceland to when he reveals his identity – we should have gotten to that plot point a bit sooner! The relationship with Anya Taylor-Joy just happens, no real development, the weapon side-quest is just filler, it's a cool fight but the sword itself becomes an afterthought for the rest of the movie so why did we spend so much time on Amleth acquiring it?
I still enjoyed the film, it’s a visual feast that should be experienced on the big screen. The MVP award goes to Nicole Kidman, it’s a fairly small role but she gets to have a lot of fun with her character’s alliance and she knocks it out of the park.
