I think we all feel some fascination towards Donald Trump, despicable and repugnant little thing that he is, sort of like our fascination with serial killers and how far they deviate from normal human values and emotions. It’s not breaking news that the behavior exhibited by men like him is a sort of learned sociopathy, a system of capitalistic values upheld and taught by men in a cycle of ego and power. As some pointed out with Civil War, The Apprentice has a unique perspective on a touchy American subject being made by an Iranian-Danish filmmaker. Ali Abbasi builds off of facts but plays with tone and structure not to create a straight biopic but a darkly comedic portrait of how the monster is made. Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are so fantastic, Stan’s slow morphing into the Trump we know now is freaking eerie. Roy Cohn is almost the more interesting character here because there’s an inherent empathy to be had for an awful man who was also victim to the prejudice of the time. To feel that empathy is uncomfortable but how you know you’re still human. Cross cutting between a funeral and Trump getting liposuction/scalp surgery is an awesome dig. I liked this!
