For every scene I really like there was another that really annoyed me, but by the end I was won over. I see how this film strikes a lot of people's hearts, but I do think this film can't decide if it really wants to be a musical for long stretches of it's runtime. It does feel like Chazelle wrote an old-time romance and then added songs quite late in the process. And Ryan Gosling being presented as some sort of saviour of pure jazz is tone-deaf to say the least. But then again, maybe I am on the hype train because I really like this film! Also Chazelle knows how to film a band scene with energy and style. His music background shines when he's filming musicians doing their thing and you can tell he loves it.
