Oppenheimer is easily Nolan’s most human film yet. I was kind of expecting the film to mostly focus on the suspense of building the bomb rather than exploring Oppenheimer himself but for the most part I was wrong. The focus is mostly on Oppenheimer and his conflicting views about the war, the Manhattan project, and the communist party. This is definitely not entirely the huge summer spectacle that the trailers advertised, although those elements are present in a handful of truly incredible scenes. This is mostly a character study about a man that cannot be entirely understood and the film makes no attempt to try and cleanly tie up his character into something easily understood. He is a walking contradiction and rather than trying to get it Nolan just lets his action speak for themselves to create a picture of a really interesting person
