What a frustrating movie. I love Kevin smith, even clerks II and mallrats (the theatrical cut) and I’d go as far to say that clerks is in my top 50 movies of all time. And I do enjoy this movie…. Kinda
It’s not all a shit show. I find Holden and Alyssa very charming and pretty sweet (until the last 30 minutes). The woody alleneque cinematography is gorgeous. And yes it’s funny, like some of Kevin’s best lines.
Alas, My enjoyment seems too dwindle when i look deeper into the movie and see how deeply problematic it is. I really love the first 40ish minutes but there is too much casual homophobia, slut shaming, toxic masculinity and bi phobia. I know it was the 90s and the 90s weren’t the most inclusive decade (especially the late 90s) but this is pure shit. It makes me cringe so hard and it makes it hard to overlook it for the good when you realise how frequent it is. It’s so rampant that it lowers the score by one star.
Again it’s not a bad movie, I’d say this would be a fun movie for straight people but my queer ass can’t stomach this in full. Portraying lesbians as “men hating whores” is unacceptable and spreads a harmful message to men.
Overall if this script was less rooted in incelish hate or written by a woman it would work so much better
