Cartoonish levels of unseriousness.
M. Night Shyamalan's latest has a high concept premise with none of the work to make any of it slightly believable.
What it has going for it is this self-aware sense of silliness. There's something almost familial about this thing and part of it is of course because of the heavily and open inclusion of Saleka Shyamalan. Because it's such an open thing, the nepotism is almost charming. This self-awareness spreads throughout the rest of the film. Shyamalan, for all the years we've witnessed his career, has appeared to have finally let go. Embracing instead to use his skills to just... do things with his kids. Making a movie is as much as a father-daughter bond as any other activity.
Now, it's all silly and even at times really entertaining but eventually the film really loses the plot and steam. The line between between thriller and comedy becomes non-existent and next thing I know I'm just happy to see Harnett has taken off his shirt. It truly is the little things.
