First thing - the film looks great. The colors are so sharp yet soft and pleasing and the film’s glossy photography is something I’ve enjoyed from all of Nia DaCosta’s films.
Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris are also SO likable and fun to watch as they charm their way into their very own supergroup. And of course, this is a cat house, so they win.
The Marvels also has a unique opportunity to play around with their action sequences providing the main premise and it sometimes takes advantage of this set up but it doesn’t fully take it to the next level like it could have.
Likewise, The Marvels also has what could be a very compelling villain. Zawe Ashton eats up the role, there are scenes in this where she is SHINING and I wanted to root for her (in the way one does for a good villain). But like the action sequences, her character is undercooked and a lot of potential gets wasted.
I appreciate the back to basics tone the film takes that let’s me sit back and enjoy these talented women bring these characters I love to life. But where the MCU is, this tone is in direct conflict with the film’s plots. As the film picks up the baton from various films and television series and stumbles in its exposition to tie it all in a neat narrative bow, The Marvels works hard to find its own voice but ultimately falls short with the results being a whelming “cool”.
Don’t even get me started on the post credit scenes that further pull apart this tale into soup.
In the end, like most of the MCU, The Marvels is just fine. Some moments of joy and excitement mixed in with half assed villains and some amusing bits.
Least this one looks pretty. And cats. Cats. Cats. Cats.
