While some may view a 3 as a negative, for me this is a positive score. It's also the highest 3 for me for 2024 out of the 11 I've given. I resonated with this and the themes a lot. The ideas and messages of a item holding grief, pain, but also connections to the past are things I firmly believe in even if i sadly don't own any family heirlooms. I think the film really knocks that out of the park. The acting is phenomenal as well. I am a John David Washington defender and this was such a great performance from him as well as everyone involved.
So why a 3? I found that besides a few very crucial scenes that this felt a bit like it didn't know what to do for a 2+ hour runtime. Quite a few scenes lead nowhere. A lot of dialogue is (intentionally) related as well which doesn't help this either. I also was not a big fan of how the supernatural stuff was implemented though i understand the meaning behind it. I do like this film, would watch it again even. I just think it's not the best it could have been. It makes me want to watch the play though which if you know me you would know I am not really a fan of plays. So I would say that's a big accomplishment and it's a solid release from Netflix this year!
