No one writes family dynamics like Noah Baumbach does. It feels second nature coming from him. Hits close to home through themes while the actual actions happening are nothing I've experienced. That sense of family complexities and egotism of the father figure is so relatable. Dustin Hoffman is great as Henry but have to say Ben Stiller & Adam Sandler really surprised me in this as Matthew and Danny respectively. Such broken characters who want to be there for their father due to the ideas of family but really just don't like him as a person. It's a feeling I'm sure a lot of us know well. If you can't tell I really liked this film, even loved it for the most part. I do think it loses steam in the last few scenes and I really hate the editing choice with those last few transitions. Besides that though I was so enthralled with this. Just a very humanistic film and shows all of the strengths of Baumbach that I have come to love (and expect). Would put this above Frances Ha but below Marriage Story, highly recommend this if you enjoyed any of his films.
