Skyler Wolf’s review published on Letterboxd:
Sort of like if Chris Sanders watched WALL-E and wanted to pitch it to DreamWorks but Andrew Stanton said to copy the homework he has to change it up a little. It's by no means a one for one copy but I do think if you listed out the general strokes of WALL-E's narrative and jumbled some character traits around these movies are very similar. But that's okay!
The Wild Robot has some gorgeous animation; there were very few parts where I could seemingly perceive things move with an unnaturalness, but within seconds they found their footing and everything looked great again. There's lots of warm vibrant tones in this that make the characters feel alive. Especially Rozz, whose design is incredibly fun and whose performance via Luptia Nyong'o is really well done. There's a lot of great acting here, but the great designs sort of stop with Rozz. Truly, all the other animals are just animals. But if they had weirdly still eyes that made them look sort of dead. Again, mostly easy to look past!
I really don't love the third act of this movie, as it very much reverts to the Children's Movie Narrative Formula(tm) for a "We're all in this together" moment. It's okay, it was still tender and sweet. Otherwise the script is pretty solid, with lots of humor that speaks near-explicitly to neurodivergence and motherhood and found family. There's a good balance of jokes for the parents (or me, alone).
I know DreamWorks has somewhat struggled as of late so I certainly understand why they're quick to approve a sequel when they've struck gold. The sequel seems set up to be especially WALL-E-y, so I hope the writing team finds a new wealth of opportunities to take the story.
