Some of the most brilliant filmmaking and storytelling that has ever been dreamt up and seeing it for a second time just solidifies that. Hysterically sobbing as I type this!!! I’m fine!! This little show about what truly haunts you like fear, grief, life, death and the life beyond death and how we choose to mourn the ones we lose is so difficult to put into words. Yet Mike Flanagan seamlessly does it in 10 episodes. But above all else, it’s about telling the people in your life that you love them while they are still here with you. In its beautifully fleeting moments that life offers you, not to waste it. The rest is confetti.
The investment in each character is so palpable that you can see yourself in each one of them. To have Nell’s silliness, Shirley’s strength, Theo’s fearlessness, Luke’s bravery, and Steve’s wit was such a labor of love. There’s nothing more personal and true than carrying someone’s stories with you everywhere you go. And I hope that one day I get to meet Mike Flanagan and tell him how much of an impact this one made on me.
