Film #8 of Hooptober 11
Should've gotten married in Vegas.
I'm filled with nostalgia that there is now a sequel to Beetlejuice, a film I have loved since the first time I saw it. This time, the Deetz family returns to Winter River, This time everyone is back in the town since Charles has died under dramatic circumstances (that relate to Jeffrey Jones is not in this one due to his past actions). Betelgeuse, who has been busy in the Afterlife, soon discovers that Lydia is back. If the Deetz family were crazy big-city folk 36 years ago, time certainly hasn't made them any less eccentric.
I appreciate Tim Burton staying true to the original and iconic 80’s style and feel while bringing new elements into the universe together with the composer Danny Elfman with his fantastic score.
For the characters we see repetitions and for the persons that steal the show, Michael Keaton doesn't sit still when he slips back into his iconic paunchy pin-striped suit doubling his screen time from the original as he never left his character. Winona Ryder continues to stand out as the insecure Lydia but now as a mom, and Catherina O’Hara is still hilarious as Delia. The addition of a perfectly chosen menage of new names Willem Dafoe, Jenna Ortega, and Monica Bellucci delivers plenty to the screen and laughs too. I love the cheeky cameo from Danny DeVito, it never fails.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (so clever title for a sequel) is more straightforward and as good as a sequel to a classic can be but couldn't help but feel that the final act wasn't as strong as the first act but enjoyed it a lot and was happy to see Tim Burton having fun with his craft again and I'm looking forward to watching it again.
