Took me about a full hour to slow my heart rate back down and begin thinking straight after this one.
The cold, sterile, slow-moving pacing reminded me a lot of the feeling of Prisoners and its Vancouver, BC location lent itself perfectly to the creepiness and tention-building. Monroe and Underwood are both fantastic, as is Nic Cage.
This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it was certainly mine. During the opening credits I felt a smile and an incredible excitement brewing as Jewel by T-Rex blared. I loved the bizarre turns this took. Even though I’d managed to guess half of the ending within the first half an hour, it still didn’t end with any predictability or normality.
Part 3 had me gradually melting back into my seat as my heart kept beating faster and faster, I haven’t been so terrified or paralysed by a film’s climax like this since Hereditary. As strange as the ending is (I’m sure a lot of people will switch off from it), I was still there with it 100%. Not everything has to make sense in fiction. Longlegs is at its best and most terrifying when otherworldly shadows and symbols are looming, both literally and figuratively.
If you go and see this one on the big screen, smoke yourself a cigarette afterwards. You deserve it. Hell, have two in a row, I did.
