Bad movie.
This probably started off as some really cool visual development pieces, but then when the time came to actually make it work, there was *poof* …nothing.
I think the biggest issue with this film was the way it handled its’ story transitions. Like, it was just one thing happening after another, and there was no sense of cause and effect. From beginning to end. No emotional through-line to hang on to.
Nothing likable about the characters. Dialogue was forced, on-the-nose, and moralistic without any true depth.
This story was already so tired (animated robot finds themselves in an environment they weren’t created for) and I just kept thinking “man, this has already been done…way better”. We already have the Iron Giant and Wall-E…and this felt like it wasn’t even trying.
I saw this in a crappy, smelly little theater, and the picture cut out halfway into the third act: and so I made up my own ending. The robot dies after trying to “rescue” all the wild animals, sacrificing itself, and when the goose boy returns the following spring, he has to come to terms with never being able to say “I love you” like he should’ve. Then the movie started up again and I was disappointed.
They never should have gone back to the futuristic city - it just detracted from the heart of the story. But that was the problem: there was no heart.
There was only ONE good thing about this film: that shot with the whales swimming over the Golden Gate Bridge. Whoever came up with that should get extra credit.
