Heard a bit of criticism about how Stone and Gosling aren't perfect singers and dancers (but they are pretty incredible considering they weren't genetically-engineered in a test tube with the blood of Gene Kelly), but that completely works for me. They are the ones who dream. They aren't perfect quite yet. They're the regular joes with a smidgen of talent that's got them this far, and they're going to be refined by the artistic system or die trying. If they were that good, they'd have already made it by now. True, would've been nice to see two fresh-faced young thesps straight off Broadway make it (thus really pushing the film's bittersweet ending to new levels of meaning), but the imperfections of the two established stars coupled with their easy-going and roomy chemistry glosses over that very nicely indeed.
Lost a bit of wow factor surrounding how Chazelle cuts the live performances of music together this time round (seems positively dull compared to Whiplash, especially when this is all about the excitement and pace of music rather than its brutality) and I'm a bit sick of these artificial long takes winning Oscars, but heck, it's La La Land, one of the cuddliest films out there, not an awful lot to complain about.
