Ageing small-time mobster Lou Pascal (Burt Lancaster) and aspiring blackjack dealer Sally Matthews (Susan Sarandon) become caught up in a plan that could endanger both of them, in Louis Malle’s romantic crime drama co-starring Kate Reid, Michel Piccoli and Robert Joy.
This marked a resurgence in Lancaster’s career, and he gives one of his best performances here, imbuing Lou with a charm that works in parallel with his questionable behaviour, showing a man out of his time looking for one last shot at success. He and Sarandon have a great rapport, and she helps to give the film its emotional centre, her character serving as a great contrast to his.
Malle captures the city on the brink of change, the old buildings torn down to make way for the new casinos in the hope of attracting some much needed profit for the area, giving the film a poignancy. This transition is reflected in Lou himself, caught up in his romanticised view of the past while the new order is emerging around him.
Although it’s very ambiguous morally, Atlantic City is a fascinating look at crime, chance and ambition, centred around a magnetic late-career lead performance.
