There's something so inviting about Brannagh's nostalgic child's-eye-view, the emotions displayed so naturally it becomes infectious. There are big things happening, but they are just a backdrop to the little things that actually matter, the small moments with family and friends around the neighborhood. It's in these moments where the laughter seems to spill over into the audience, uniting the crowd with the film in such a friendly way. It's a pretty insubstantial film that plays incredibly safe and careful, but it is warm, acknowledging the full childhood experience filtered through youthful innocence. Maybe I just got lucky with a really great crowd, but this was a really nice theater experience.
