Chasing Amy

Chasing Amy

“A chick flick that is for blokes, Chasing Amy contains the perfect mix of crude dialogue, nifty comedy, romance and dense drama. I think it's safe to say that Kevin Smith used his notorious wits in the expanse of keen and unlike-genre romcom.”

The life of two comic book writers Holden (Ben Affleck) Banky (Jason Lee) change when they meet a new friend Alyssa Jones (Joey Lauren Adams), Holden falls for Alyssa sweet and calming nature but has it turns out Alyssa is a lesbian. Chasing Amy is a romcom that delivers finest of dialogues, moments and love story that ever put into a movie. The script is so well written by writer/director Kevin Smith who dives into his self-made universe. He lays it out plain and simple about relationships, love, and the insecurities many of us deal with. We all have baggage, though maybe not as extreme as what is in this movie, that we have to deal with in a relationship. It’s a realistic, raw yet with touches of comedy and fairy-tale like elements. What surprises is the little but hard complexities put to the mood of the film, the viewer might find it comical but we have to take into account that characters are witty but they also made with heartfelt thoughts. Jason Lee, Ben Affleck both were fine but the actor who stole the show was Joey Lauren Adams as Alyssa Jones, her fresh, moody and resilient performance was the heart of the film. All three actors do prove that they can play more serious comedic roles. Lauren and Ben both shine together their chemistry is what makes the story so realistic and personal for the viewer. Subjects regarding sex, lesbianism, and love are smartly written, even though they can be stereotypical I believe that was what the writer was aiming for. I should be watching more Kevin Smith directed movies, Chasing Amy might be the first, will try to follow the View Askew movies in future but as right now Chasing Amy is the perfect way to get into his movies as he delivered one of greatest RomComs that have solid drama combined into it perfectly.

Bonus
Solid Joey Lauren as Alyssa Jones performance. Holden and Silent Bob monologues. Heartfelt and smart writing for a romcom. Good cheerful score.
