The Marvels

The Marvels

I wish I could have liked this more. I think I had some fantasy of being like, "This is actually good!" And maybe for some people, it is! As bad as some of the MCU has been, a lot of the movies have been geared towards people watching the movies, and frankly, one of the target demographics is dudes in their 30s. As a dude in my 30s, I can work with that. It's not that the movie's all together bad, but when it's aiming SO hard at teenage girls, I had a hard time relating. I just did NOT like Ms. Marvel at any point in this movie. I'm hearing/reading anecdotes about how much they liked this though, which is cool. It IS weird to that the movie has the main character calling herself one of the only teen superheroes, when Peter Parker also exists. Sure, we all know he's in his 20s, but he's such a cute little baby in the movies.

I also hate that Samuel L. Jackson is just... weird in this. He's become the comic relief, which just never works for me. He used to be so cool, and now he's just goofy and oddly sincere at times.

Same old problems with the MCU lately. I refuse to watch any of the shows (it's more that I don't want to pay for Disney+, especially when there are so many other good things on), and this movie somehow managed to spew nonstop exposition while making me feel like I didn't understand the backstory at all. Like all the backstory with Teyonah Parris. Am I supposed to understand that all that backstory is in some other TV show somewhere? Or the first Captain Marvel movie? Or just that it exists in the complicated timeline of this movie? None of those would make this feel like it was a good screenplay, and I understand it's a hard thing to balance for audiences who haven't seen everything, but it just felt kind of uninspired and boring.

This does get some bonus points for having so many cats. And for the mid-credits scene. Frankly, that was my favorite part. Considering I'm excited about the MCU expanding, am I the problem??
