I’d like to thank my girlfriend who surprised me with a ticket to see OPPENHEIMER in 70mm IMAX at the AMC Rivercenter here in San Antonio. She’s so kind she also purchased one for my brother so that I could rewatch it with him. I struggled to find any tickets, and I didn’t think I’d get to see Christopher Nolan’s magnum opus on the intended format. Today I did. I’ll never forget the experience.
At first sight, the highly-regarded 70mm IMAX screen was utterly massive. It felt like two 4k IMAX screens stacked on top of each other. The insane magnitude of the screen is no joke and can’t be overstated in how incredibly epic it is in size. As a first-timer to the format, just the screen with nothing playing on it was already intimidating on its own (and for the better).
Right when the movie began I felt that sensation I get when films are hitting that place in my heart. That place where I know I don’t feel I’m merely watching a movie. I felt this viewing was larger than any cinematic experience I’ve ever had, both literally and emotionally. Ludwig Göransson’s score stood out to me at the beginning and end; the blaring, epic music was indescribable. Cillian Murphy’s mannerisms and voice speaks so much to Oppenheimer throughout. And wow, what an achievement for Nolan himself. The film is not without flaw, I can admit. From my very first thoughts on the film I didn’t want to hand it a 5 star rating just yet. Soon after I changed my mind, declaring this film Nolan’s best. After seeing it in 70mm IMAX, I am even more sure that OPPENHEIMER is one of my favorite films of all time, and one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen.
