When this movie first started, I thought I made a big mistake going to see it. After hearing such positive buzz, the animation felt shockingly clunky, awkward, and unfinished. Regardless of that, I predominantly felt bored by the story and confused how this of all films was being speculated to become only the fourth animated film nominated for best picture at the Oscars.
However, once the robot lead Roz meets that cute little duckling, my tune changed. I wasn’t in love with the movie or anything, but I couldn’t help but be charmed. I honestly may have said “aww” out loud. From that point onward, the quality of the animation improved a great deal and the story started working better for me too. Watching this emotionless machine try and fail to be a mother to this baby bird was fun and quite funny. And Roz’s various mechanical abilities were sometimes quite cool and creative. Seeing her adapt to the nature around her and imitate different animals to survive in the wilderness was also intriguing.
It’s by no means a great movie, very much in line with Dreamworks Animation’s entertaining, but passable The Bad Guys rather than the unexpectedly heartfelt Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, but, nevertheless, I still had some decent fun with The Wild Robot. It’s predictable and maybe too long, but its heart is in the right place. I probably would’ve loved it as a little kid and collected all the toys, but as an adult, I was mildly engaged. That said, I’ve read some other reviews and it’s possible that this could hit a lot harder for me if/when I become a parent one day.
