Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig achieves the perfect, near impossible feat of balancing the personal and the political. A family in Tehran are forced to confront their own role in the unjust violence against women in their community.
Rasoulof’s film is both a searing political statement against the current Regime, while also evolving into harrowing Hitchcockian mystery. It’s the sort of genre shift that could have stepped into melodrama in the hands of a lesser filmmaker, but this film is unrelenting and essential in depicting the decline of a family unit into chaos and conspiracy.
