Obliteration of the self, the fear of love and fate. Bertrand Bonello’s The Beast (La Bête) shapeshifts from a frivolous costume period drama to psychological thriller and postmodern tragedy. While the film remains engaging for every second of its runtime, I found the second half, which casts a high-fashion Lynchian pulse onto a fever dream of supermodels, stalkers and electronic music to be unrelenting and absorbing.
