Christophe Honoré packs a punch with this subtle and intimate story of two Frenchmen that meet watching Jane Campion’s The Piano and spend 130ish minutes listening to Ride, Cocteau Twins and hanging out against backdrops for Querelle and Boy Meets Girl.
Honoré directs two fantastic lead performances by Vincent Lacoste (who gave my #1 supporting turn in Honoré’s Winter Boy last year) and Pierre Deladonchamps. Also noteworthy is Denis Podalydès in a great supporting role.
Most impressive is how Honoré’s script is so full of minor incidents and small moments, yet manages to be incredibly gripping for over two hours. That ending is very divise, but honest.
As a final side-note, the semi-autobiographical tendencies on display in Sorry Angel, and Winter Boy too, allows this film to transcend.
