So this is basically like a remake of Claire Denis’ Friday Night but about a silent bromance with the most frustrating, insufferable man you’ve ever met. Or George Sluizer’s The Vanishing if Rex couldn’t care less about Saskia’s disappearance.
I did find strong affection for the repeated driving sequences, and the way the camera would linger on temptation so long that as a viewer, you’re ready to almost encourage the protagonist to give in. Feels like this would’ve come together better if directed by Christian Petzold. It has the eerieness of his 2000s-core films, but none of the intrigue - at least until the final act; masterful phone call sequence and all.
If nothing else, Red Lights captures the exact feeling of a hungover Uber ride.
