I feel strongly that Nocturama would be considered a formative film had it been released fifty years earlier. Though it is narratively contemporary, it is directed with so much distance, mechanical precision, and choreographed flare.
Bertrand Bonello takes his place alongside Robin Campillo - for the opening of Eastern Boys - and Jonathan Glazer as twenty-first century filmmakers that deliver work as astonishingly unique and original as Kubrick.
From its near silent opening act, to the overstimulating noise of the second half, every shot of this film finds a way to visually express and meditate on youth culture, consumerism, art, and performance. A total knockout!
