Mati Diop’s first documentary loses none of her interest in the supernatural and spiritual. From afar, Dahomey might seem slight as a Golden Bear winner running less than 70 minutes. But Diop achieves something profound in collaging voiceover, documentary footage and images of France and Benin. Through unarchiving the past, maybe we can all learn more about ourselves and our relationship to colonialism.
