Grand and subtle, epic and intimate
The first time Bergman has shown brilliance and restraint when it comes to love. His earlier movies about love are much more broad and unpolished. He cares about the environment that created and sustained the protagonists. Scenes from a Marriage eliminates those distractions and focuses almost completely on Johan and Marianne. Each of the conversations explore every emotion that someone may feel in a crumbling relationship.
This, Hannah and Her Sisters, and The Mother and the Whore are the best films about love. Each putting the main characters through every emotion that one will feel in a relationship.
