internalised homophobia is something i’ve grown well acquainted within a short seventeen years. i’ve had rumours spread about me; i know the feeling of whispers hanging in the air just out of reach. sometimes true and always moulded to be hurtful, they were never mine. back then, other people decided what or who i was, and then decided not to tell me. for some reason, they think they own your struggle. your feelings become stories that are told at lunchtimes, your questions answered by people who barely know your name. it’s easy to lose yourself in all of this, when your story’s being broadcasted and you can’t see yourself in it. silhouettes of what people think you are dance around you, and sometimes you wonder whether you’re becoming one of them. my heart aches knowing that i relate to, even on the slightest level, what this decades-old movie is trying to say. even today, for some, it’s not the kind of thing they want to talk about.
