What a treat. I remember being kinda critical of it in ‘02 maybe for playing things a little too broadly, but this time - as part of my 10 year-old’s MCU pre-reqs - it seemed exactly right. I was just really happy to be watching a superhero movie with a director who had such a strong sense of tone, who was able to bring his own sensibility to it. I was a little surprised to find that it was made in very much the same spirit as Burton’s Batman (though, consistent with the character, less goth), getting the right balance of sincerity, seriousness, thrills, and tongue in cheek comedy. Maguire is terrific and so is Dunst.
The ten year old was not really having any of it. “Oh here we go with another action scene yawn.” Strongly prefers Superman II and Batman ‘66. Maybe the MCU can wait another decade.
