The cinematic parallels to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man franchise are radiating immensely. Two down on their luck lovers. One trying to make it as an actress and the other trying to make ends meet in a dying industry. One thing is certain in life: JK Simmons was born to fire people. Electric.
In all seriousness, this is one of the most beautifully tragic films I’ve ever seen. Every time I watch it’s like having your heart ripped from your chest over and over. It hurts so good. Damien Chazelle’s passion for film/filmmaking is what takes this picture to the next level. Beautiful imagery, captivating shot composition, the use of color like a kid with the 32 pack of crayons & above all else dynamic direction. It’s not easy balancing the tone shifts of a musical but Chazelle does it in spades. Born with the juice.
