sam’s review published on Letterboxd:
let me start off by saying that my perspective is pretty skewed. i had to cancel a 2:30 viewing because of a college visit, and i somehow thought it would be a good idea to watch this at 10:30 pm directly after barbie. 😃 so i was extra confused on some stuff + the movie didn’t exactly fly by.
that being said i have never had a greater theater experience in my life. this being the first imax movie i’ve seen by myself, i had the freedom to sit closer to the front for once. it did not disappoint. every shot was grand, massive in scale, and the volume was something else. the trinity test sequence, oppenheimer’s visions, and those little cuts and sparks are mind blowing. a masterpiece in the technical world, and i have no doubts this will dominate at the oscars. (but maybe dune 2?)
a very dialogue heavy film with a lot to remember and mostly a court case, but i somehow love it. i didn’t understand a lot, i was sleepy, but i still feel it’s great qualities. probably gonna be a while until i rewatch tho because don’t think i’m gonna spend another 20 dollars for imax again.
i loved the score for the most part and the rising strings reminded me of there will be blood which was cool, but i think music didn’t have to be playing all the time. like there were a couple scenes it felt like background music and it really would have benefited from just being silent. besides that, the sound in general was well executed and powerful.
lastly, the acting is amazing. never fake for a second, and every character had great performances. benny saddle’s character seemed distracting and his accent was unbelievable at first, but it grew on me by the end. happy to see rdj in a great role and he definitely gave a great performance. cillian murphy shows so much emotion through his eyes and it is mesmerizing to look at, so glad he’s the lead role.
i saw people talking about feeling devastated from this film but i didn’t really get that. probably cause i sat through 5 hours of media and i was in a haze trying to comprehend it all at 2am. i don’t think this will ever work as well on a tv screen, but maybe i should see this again soon?? idk, i’d say this is nolan’s best or maybe tied with the dark knight. amazing experience, review done ok bye.
