Whether or not this was intended to uncover the “real” Dylan is beside the point. I’m Not There isn’t as much of a portrait of him as it is a gallery of the portraits that we’ve painted of him. It’s more a collage of culture’s varying perceptions than an intense and clinical character study. Regardless, it’s about as weird as a biopic can—and probably should—get, which is exactly what Dylan is owed. If it’s a “some other Bob” film that we’re getting, I’d rather it look like this than anything else.
