The year's best animated film and its best superhero film. (It would also be accurate to say "the year's only good animated film and its only good superhero film," but that would sound too much like damning faint praise, and I really liked this.)
There was never any way Into the Spider-Verse was going to be anything other than the 4th best Spider-Man movie – it wouldn't reach the heights of the Raimi films, nor would it sink to the depths of everything else – but thankfully it's closer to the former than the latter. Loads of fun, often hilarious, a joy to look at (thank God for an American animated film that finally does something different with the medium!), and an earnest tribute to the character and his history; the whole thing is more than a little reminiscent of last year's LEGO Batman (somewhere, Robert Brown's ears are perking up), though my first impression is that it's spread thinner and doesn't have quite the same tangible emotional core. I found many moments affecting in the moment, but it's quickly worn a bit thin in my memory; there's just a bit too much going on here and I'm not quite grasping a thematic throughline that ties it all together. But there's always a chance that'll change on repeat viewings, and I liked this enough to go back and find out.
P.S. The noir Spider-Man voiced by Nic Cage doing his best Humphrey Bogart impression is my favorite.
