A nice, truly biting satire that portrays a smart look at the process of broadcasting the news with dramas that circulates to the business outside of the green room by a nice cast and their flawless performances to fulfill the likeness of the characterization and some quirky humor they bring along to make this film a really good watch.
It's sort of a whimsical romantic version of Network with the charm and sentimentality you would expect, but a serious, philosophical moral backbone that you may/may not. The characters are idiosyncratic and deal with personal failings and struggles in ways that are both relatable and unpredictable. James L. Brooks really has a way of making clichéd circumstances interesting and beautiful. "Broadcast News" could have been another forgettable 80s rom-com but thankfully its screenplay is thoroughly witty and doesn't incorporate slightest of forced melodrama that makes it worth watching. Holly Hunter is just phenomenal and puts so many layers into a well written female role. Moreover, each of the lead actors is spectacular in their own right and the questions and messages the film has to convey are explicit and yet do not overwhelm the storyline. James L. Brooks has knavishly represented the detailing of each one of his characters, such as the up and coming lead anchor (William Hurt), the cute but insecure producer (Holly Hunter), and the talented but looked over reporter (Albert Brooks) who is hopelessly in love with her. The clichéd "love triangle" is actually handled meticulously well, with certain angles being thrown in that I have not seen before.
The only gripe I have -- there were a couple of moments that tried to make the film feel and look impressive like the use of deep focus shots, but the problem was that it didn't do anything for the film's story or characters. Although, I feel the exceptional performances from each of the three leads, the burlesque themes and a script that feels as genuine and well-researched as a hard-hitting news report makes up for it.
P.S. I highly recommend Broadcast News to anyone who enjoys thought provoking entertainment.
