Todd Haynes tonal tightrope walk in all things blackly comic, campy melodrama and psychological thriller, letting his leading ladies in Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore crank and often over-crank their examination on the artifice performance in search of truth while allowing his leading man Charles Melton to centre it all with both a charismatic and childlike performance. A multi-layered film that has rightly called Persona, and Douglas Sirk to attention in critical appraisal, but I couldn’t help feel some Abbas Kiarostami in the mix, particularly Certified Copy and Close-up. If you can get on its wavelength, particularly with its sharp and stabbing soap opera inspired score lifted straight from The Go-Between intruding on your experience, you will no doubt see where Haynes’ playful camera lens is leading you. This is pretty damn impressive and could easily be seen again and again to derive multiple delights from its intrigue and thematic richness.
